She was petite and thin, with thick dark hair
and deep pink lips.

A mole on the left corner of her mouth
interrupted her white complexion.

Donna Franca grew up among the smell
of mowed grass, the colors of sunsets
on the hills and the scents of freshly pressed olives
.

In a picture steeped in beauty and flourishing
she learned to love the earth,
to respect it, to name the trees
by looking at their leaves.

She got to know the taste of olives
still warm from the sun and discovered how
to turn them into precious juice.
